Clothing and Food Program

With the support of Community Food Bank and United Way, Hispanic Multi-Purpose Service Center (HMPSC), distributes donated clothing and food to those in need in Paterson and Passaic County.

Clothing

HMPSC Clothing Program provides clothing for children and adults (when available). This service is available three days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) from 9:00am to 11:00am.

Food Pantry

HMPSC distributes a bag of donated food and grocery products to individuals and homeless facing hunger in the area. This service is available three days a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

Food Distribution from non-profit organizations and churches

On Thursday’s mornings, a Community Food Bank truck delivers fruits and vegetables. These items goods are to be shared with other churches and community based organization in Paterson and Passaic City.

Who is eligible?

Low-income families, single person and homeless individuals. Individuals receiving unemployment or unemployed or whoever is in need of community services.

HMPSC accepts donations of goods from individual community members, corporations and other organizations. We also accept in-kind donations.

Workforce Learning Link Program

The Workforce Learning Link is an initiative created in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) and NJN Public Television to provide adult learners instruction in reading, writing, and math; communication, and life skills. Using digital television technology, streaming video, computer software, the Internet and print materials, NJN provides interactive training services that allow participants to address individual employment-related issues at their own pace.

The Workforce Learning Link program is currently available at One-Stop Career Centers in all twenty-one counties, at the Hispanic Multi-Purpose Service Center (HMPSC) and other community-based organizations in Paterson.

Who is eligible?

The Workforce Learning Link is designed to deliver workforce training programs and services directly to welfare registrants, dislocated workers and other job seekers identified by the LWD, the New Jersey Department of

Corrections and other agencies. Passaic county residents can apply in-person at the Passaic One-Stop Career Center.

Learning Employment Growth Opportunities (L.E.G.O)

The LEGO after school program, provided by HMPSC, helps students develop their work readiness skill by using digital technologies and familiarizing youth with workplace expectations. Latino youth receive training in the information technology skills needed to join the emerging digital economy.

Topics will include:

  • Occupational research: Conduct research about careers in demand and to identify work related trends.
  • Decision-making: Make and establish long and short-term goals
  • Career skills for interviewing: Learn how to contact potential employers, evaluate job offers and benefits. Also, they learn to present their qualifications during interviews.
  • Career Life Planning: Participants receive help to evaluate their accomplishments and career growth.

Who is eligible?

Non-English speaking Latinos students, age 15-16 who are attending Martin Luther King High School. Students must be referred by school faculty member.

Family Information & Referrals Counseling Program

What is the Family Information &
Referrals Counseling program?

This program offers services to help needy individuals and families who are experiencing complex problems such as unemployment, mental health, juvenile delinquency, family crisis situations and economic instability.

Services provided

Crisis intervention, domestic violence counseling, family and individual counseling; social services assistance, and cultural sensitive counseling to newly arrived multi-cultural population in our area.

Who is eligible?

Indigent individuals or families from our community. Also, recently arrived families from the Caribbean, Central and South American are encouraged to apply. Must meet income eligibility requirements, families in need of depth

counseling. Most clients are referred from area agencies, local churches, schools or hospitals.

Survival Skills Program

The Survival Skills Program offers employment referrals, job training and counseling as well as referrals to workshops, job fairs and employment seminars. We are also able to provide emergency food and shelter to clients in need of such services. We try to serve the client to the utmost, procuring to stabilize the client’s crisis and providing a way to alleviate his/her burden.

We accept clients both on a walk-in basis as well as by referral from another agency. We do not maintain a waiting list at this time.

Who is eligible?

Low-income young families or individuals, ages 13- 24 years old, TANF and general assistance recipients, high school dropouts and unemployed individuals.

HIV Education and
Prevention Program

The Ryan White Part A Program offers access to quality and availability of care and support services to persons infected and affected by AIDS/HIV disease.

HMPSC staff evaluates consumer needs and works to ensure timely access to medically appropriate levels of care and support services for consumer and family members’ needs such as: primary medical care, psychosocial, substance abuse programs and other supportive services. The program provides consumers with assistance in obtaining a safe and suitable dwelling. All information is kept confidential.

Services available: Case Management

Referral services to: Emergency financial assistance (utilities), housing and related service, nutritional services, primary care, substance abuse, mental abuse, oral health and social services agency.

Also, transportation services (van service or bus passes). These services are only available for medical and supportive services.

Persons living and affected with HIV and AIDS in the Passaic and Bergen Counties.

S.W.I.T.C.H.

(Single Women in Transitional and
Comprehensive Housing)

The S.W.I.T.C.H program offers a safe shelter and support for homeless pregnant women and their children. Each family is provided with a room and private bath during their participation in the program.

Also, participants receive training on skills they need to maintain a household in their own such as parenting, home management and life skills. All residents are enrolled in job skills training and support services to assure their ability to gain employment. Participants get access to community based child care so they can attend training.

Training Provided:

Parenting Skills: Appropriate disciplining, baby’s care, First Aid, Family Planning, Nutrition, Stress Management, Time Management, Domestic Violence & Child Abuse Prevention Program

Home Management Skills: Money Management, Budgeting, Credit and Savings, House Safety, Recycling and Cooking.

Employment Readiness Skills: Self-Esteem, Assertiveness, Time Management, Team Building, Job Interview Techniques and Resume Writing.

Who is eligible?

Independent and self-motivated single mothers age 16-24 who are homeless or potentially homeless with no more than two children under age 8. Also, young homeless expectant mothers are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a US citizen or legal resident. Clients are referred by the DYFS Local Office.

Youth Drop-In-Center for
GLBTQ Youth

The Youth Drop-In Center and program for GLBTQ Youth provided by HMPSC is the first and only of it’s kind in Paterson and Passaic County. The Youth Center is a safe and empowering space for GLBTQ youth to develop a healthier behavior and relationship with family, school and work; to learn about HIV/STD prevention and education, and to build-up skills necessary to modify high-risk behavior and self-esteem. GLBTQ youth gain the skills and support they need to develop into healthy adults.

The facility offers computer training, health education, diversity and cultural awareness workshops and seminars, youth leadership training, life skills training workshops, counseling services, and social activities. The program provides weekly support group, social activities, crisis intervention counseling and case management services.

The drop-in center is open Monday through Friday 1:00 p.m. to 9:00pm.

Young Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Questioning (GLBTQ), ages 13-24 and their families. All information is kept confidential.
